Back from Break! Retribution of Scyrah ho!

Hey everyone,

I took a few week break from blogging in order to recoup after the annual OFCC event and to refocus on the hobby.  After a few weeks I'm happy to start in on my next project.  I have decided that it is time to paint up my warmachine army and get it ready for playing.

I first began this trek by taking out all of my painted retribution of scyrah and putting it into an acetone bath.  After all the paint had been removed, I went about laying all of my newly stripped models on a cookie sheet to dry next to the sink.  My wife had said "Move  your toys I'm going to start the disposal."  as she flipped the switch to allow the sink to drain and the disposal to work.  I quickly reached out to grab the tray when I hit it instead and sent all 50 pts of freshly stripped models into the disposal....

I am glad that the disposal I invested in 4 years ago is strong enough to handle all that metal....

So...

New Retribution models!

Also because I am insane I also decided to order custom bases from http://www.tabletop-art.de/

I then went about pinning and assembling the new battle force including cutting off the tabs that are inserted into bases as the new resin bases require me to pin them.

So in a few weeks I shall begin the painting process and have 50 pts of Retribution of Scyrah ready to go!
Then who knows, may start the Circle!

Hobbytime hooo!

Iron Kingdoms Roleplaying Game and Retribution of Scyrah Lists

I have recently been invited to play in an Iron Kingdoms Fantasy Roleplaying game with a few friends of mine.  Now I had posted a while back in my Breaking up with Dungeons and Dragons 4.0 topic that I was rather done with most role playing games as Wargaming took the driver’s seat with most of my free time (what little exists anymore!).  Now the Deployment Zone podcast had spent two episodes describing the Iron Kingdoms Roleplaying System as well as playing through a quick game to test out the mechanics.  During that time my gaming group had listened to the podcast and decided that they would run a campaign after the holidays and tie it into a Warmachine/Hordes map campaign.  So the six of us are going to play a map based Warmachine/Hordes/Iron Kingdoms campaign and roleplaying game with the map campaign being over for both systems in summer and the roleplaying game continuing for an undetermined amount of time.
The Full Metal Fantasy Campaign Rules:
1.  You are to submit one faction to play for each game, Hordes and Warmachine.
2.  You are allowed to field 2 lists per game system.
3.  Each list must be 50 pts.
4.  You are to submit one character for the Iron Kingdoms Roleplaying Game.  You do not have to play a character from the same faction as your armies.
5. You are expected to play in the Iron Kingdoms Roleplaying Game twice a month and the map based Warmachine/Hordes campaign once a month (once per faction – 2 games a month).’
6.  Iron Kingdoms characters are to start at level 1.

Map Based Campaign Rules:
1.  You are limited to 2 hexes of movement per turn.  Movement into another territory takes 1 hex of movement, regardless of the type of terrain (water, mountains, etc..)
2.  You may only attack a faction/army an adjacent hex away.  Attacking requires 1 hex of movement.
3.  You may only garrison territories that have been claimed for more than one game turn. (i.e. you can not garrison a territory the same turn as you conquer it)
4.  Garrisoning a territory requires 1 hex of movement and will allow you to defend the territory against invaders.
5.  Non-garrisoned territories may not be defended and are automatically captured.
6.  Capitols are automatically considered garrisoned.
7.  There will be 4 Seasons, each Season consisting of 3 Game Turns.
8.  A player’s faction is wiped out when there are no territories occupied by that player’s army.
9.  The winner is determined to be the player with the most territories.
10.  Players may not “aid” their other faction with their other army.  The two armies are treated as aggressive when adjacent and may not be treated as “Neutral” territories and therefore able to be passed through.  When a player is forced to invade a territory controlled by his other faction, if it is garrisoned then the Campaign Master will play the defender for that match.
11.  Two players may agree to be “Neutral” with one another for a single Game Turn.  While two players are neutral, players may move through each other’s territories without engaging in combat.  Hordes and Warmachine factions may not be Neutral with each other and are always considered Aggressive.
12.  You may only declare neutrality once per Season.

So with this set of rules established for the campaign, I set about drafting up both my army lists and my character for the game.  I have decided upon for Warmachine the Retribution of Scyrah and for Hordes the Circle Orboros.   The lists I’m going to use are detailed below:

My Iron Kingdoms character is an Iosan Mage Hunter/ Cutthroat and as many of you have already probably predicted his name is Sylvos.  I will post his character sheet for your viewing pleasure after the first session.  I will be providing hopefully bi-weekly updates on the Full Metal Fantasy Campaign for both the Map Campaign and the Roleplaying Game.  Until then, that’s it for now!

Kicking off the new year right! Warmachine, Hordes and some Warhammer Fantasy WIP!

I decided to kick off the new year right by assembling a slew of new models to jumpstart the hobby for 2014!

Since it was painfully apparent that I was not the most productive hobbyist in 2013, I think that ensuring that I have my 50 point armies and the heroes of my Warriors of Chaos army assembled is a good step in the right direction!

Here is the group shot which is comprised of;
10 Mage Hunter Infiltrators
1 Epic Eiryss Mage Hunter Commander
1 Warpborn Skinwalker Alpha
2 War Wolves
1 Winter Argus
1 Reeve of Orboros
2 Wolves of Orboros
1 Narn, Mage Hunter Assassin
1 Sylys
1 Arcanist

You may also see the primed Mierce Miniatures Minotaurs in the background who are set on wine corks and ready to be painted.  Those hopefully will be done soon.

Below is the Warpborn Skinwalker Alpha.  One of my favorite models by Privateer Press but also one of my least favorite to assemble.  I am never a fan of spikes that are too small to pin being included (being too small to pin means the small drill I have which is super tiny is too wide for the bit) or pieces that are just weird to attach such as a jaw.
End result however looks great.

The Mage Hunter Infiltrators are a neat set.  The models come without arms attached and the arms specifically match their models torso.  Now I hate pinning diagonal angles which is what I had to do on half of these things.  It's a pain in the ass, learn to cast in plastic if you can't do it right.

If you will note, I have the new Eiryss model included as well.  I am not a fan of this model for various reasons.  The model is very thin and feels spindly for starters, the models metal cloak is too thin to pin and has two connection points at her shoulders.  The models arms are barely pinnable as I had to be captain awesome to get the angle right to pin.  Lastly the crossbow she has can in no way be properly pinned since the metal is not only too soft but also the connection point is too small.  Usually Privateer Press is awesome about the models they cast, this one however is a fail.

Lastly we have the two metal characters in the Warriors of Chaos army.  The Chaos Lord on a Daemonic Mount was relatively easy to assemble however I had to cut pieces of rod to serve as spikes since the spikes that come with the model are too small to pin and kept snapping off despite my best glue jobs.  Also, as you can see I have the Archaon, the Chosen laid out in pieces on my cutting mat.  He will be assembled next.  I can not wait!

Character Creation in the Iron Kingdoms Roleplaying Game

Character Creation in the Iron Kingdoms Roleplaying Game
When you sit down to create a character in the Iron Kingdoms game setting, the process for character generation is both quick and easy.  The designers did a great job of streamlining what could have been an extremely complex process to a very simple five steps.  I’m going to go through the steps and create an Iron Kingdoms character during this post to showcase how fast and easy it is to generate a player character.

Creating Your Character

Step 1: Choose your character’s race

There are seven options to choose from for race selection.  You may be a Human, Dwarf, Gobber, Iosan, Nyss, Ogrun or Trollkin.  Dependent upon which race you choose will determine your starting stats.  I have chosen to go with the Iosan race.  In addition to my starting stat line, I will choose my height, weight, view what archetypes are available to me and write down what racial benefits/abilities I gain for choosing Iosan.  Each race has a preset base set of stats that they are given which every player then uses to create their character.  For the most part most racial stats begin anywhere from 2-8.
My starting Primary* and Secondary stats go as follows for an Iosan:
·         Physique* (PHY): 5 - How tough the character is – also helps determine Willpower, Armor [ARM], and number of damage circles on the Life Spiral
·         Speed (SPD): 6 - This determines how fast the character moves and is also use to help calculate and derive stats such as Defense [DEF] and Initiatve.
·         Strength (STR): 4 – This is the measure of how strong the character is by determining how much they may carry and how much damage they inflict during melee combat.
·         Agility* (AGL): 3 – The measure of how quick and nimble a character can be.  This stat is also affects non-combat skills involving coordination and reflexes.  The Agility stat is also used to help determine the character’s Defense [DEF] and the number of damage circles on the Life Spiral.
·         Poise (POI): 4 - This stat determines hand eye coordination and manual dexterity.  This stat is used for attacking with ranged weapons.
·         Prowess (PRW): 4 – This stat determines the character’s grace and balance.  It is also used to for attacking with a melee weapon.
·         Intellect* (INT): 4 – This is the character’s wits and mental dexterity.  It also helps determine Willpower and number of damage circles on the Life Spiral.
·         Arcane (ARC): nil – When a character chooses the Gifted Archetype, then they are provided with a base stat for this secondary ability score.  If they are a will weaver the base is 3, if they are a focuser it starts out as 2.  This ability score helps determine the character’s arcane power.
·         Perception (PER): 3 – This is the character’s awareness and astuteness.  It also helps determine the character’s Defense [DEF] and Initative.
The starting Derived Stats go as follows:
·         Defense (DEF) – Speed + Agility + Perception = 6+3+3 = 12
·         Initiative – Speed + Prowess +Perception = 6+4+3 = 13
·         Armor (ARM) – Physique + Armor Type = 5 + ? = 5
·         Willpower – Physique + Intellect = 5+4 = 9

Now that I have jotted down my primary, secondary and derived starting stat, I will decide how tall or short I want my character and their weight. When that is complete, I will then select my languages.  Since I am an Iosan my starting language is Shyr and I get one additional language that I will select as Cynarian/Sulese.  Once that has been decided, I will jot down my racial ability which is – Iosan’s are able to begin game with an additional ability selected from one of their careers.

Step 2: Choose your character’s Archetype

The Archetype determines what type of character that you are going to play.  There are four archetypes that are available: Gifted, Intellectual, Mighty and Skilled.  Each archetype bestows certain capabilities, attributes and benefits that shape how a character performs in the game.

I have chosen the Skilled archetype which provides me the following benefits:
-          The character is able to perform an additional attack during the Activation phase if I choose to attack that turn
-          I chose the Ambidextrous benefit which means I do not suffer the normal attack penalty with a second weapon while using the Two-weapon Fighting Ability.

Step 3: Choose your two Careers

In Iron Kingdoms you do not have character classes but rather a career mechanic where you choose two of their careers and the two options will create a character concept that defines your character.

I have chosen to use the Mage Hunter career (Iosan only) as my first choice.  I chose the Mage Hunter not only because he is a skilled assassin that hunts down human sorcerers and arcanists but also because it fits the theme of my Retribution of Scyrah theme I wanted to accomplish.
The Mage Hunter career provides the following Starting Abilities, Connections and Skills:
-          Abilities: Arcane Assassin and Iron Will
-          Connections: Retribution of Scyrah
-          Military Skills: Hand Weapon 1 and I chose Crossbow 1
-          Occupational Skills: Climbing 1, Jumping 1, Sneak 1, and Tracking 1.
-          Starting Assets: 75 gc

Now that I have chosen my first career, I need to choose another career that will complete the theme I want.  I took Ambidextrous when I chose the Skilled archetype so I should find a career where Two-weapon Fighting is an ability available to that career.  I also want to excel at being sneaky and using hit and run tactics.  The only careers that have the Two-weapon Fighting ability available to them are Cutthroat, Duelist, Highwayman, and Pistoleer.  Having examined the four available choices, the Cutthroat fits the theme the best.
The Cutthroat career provides the following Starting Abilities, Connections and Skills:
-          Abilities: Anatomical Precision, Backstab, and Prowl.  I also chose Two-weapon Fighting as my additional ability available to me due to being an Iosan.
-          Connections: Criminal
-          Military Skills: Hand Weapon and I chose Crossbow 1
-          Occupational Skills: Intimidation 1, Sneak 1 and Streetwise 1.
-          Starting Assets: 75 gc

I have chosen careers that rely on stealth, assassination and brutal combat effectiveness.  The character will begin the game with the following package:
-          Abilities: Arcane Assassin, Iron Will, Anatomical Precision, Backstab, Prowl and Two-weapon Fighting
-          Connections: Retribution of Scyrah and Criminal
-          Military Skills: Hand Weapon 2 and Crossbow 2
-          Occupational Skills: Climbing 1, Jumping 1, Sneak 2, Tracking 1, Intimidation 1, and Streetwise 1.
-          Starting Assets: 150 gc

Step 4: Increase Stats

The character is given three advancement points to spend on the character’s primary of secondary stats.  In this instance since I am playing a character that relies on Stealth, Melee Prowess and Agility then I need to put my points into Agility, Perception and Prowess.

Once the three advancement points have been allocated, then it is important to fill out the Life Spiral.  This character will have 5 bubbles into the Physique section, while Agility and Perception both close with 4 bubbles each bringing the total to 13 bubbles.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

This is the part of the game where you spend your newfound wealth on equipment and items.  Since I want to be fast and mobile, I have chosen to buy the Custom Battle Armor (-1 DEF, +6 ARM).  I chose to buy two Swords, a Crossbow, and a Quiver.  I will still have 16 gc left.

Now that all of those steps have been completed, I will then list out the character as he should appear.

Armor: Custom Battle Armor (-1 DEF, +6 ARM)

This entire process took less than 15 minutes to generate and flesh out a fully functional and themed character that serves as a brutal Mage Hunter and Assassin for the Retribution of Scyrah.  As you can see this process was easy and streamlined to get the players involved quickly and games started. I will try to spend some time in the next few weeks describing how the system plays works especially social encounters and combat.

Until next time, enjoy!

Latest projects and games for July

Well, not many blog posts this month because I've been super busy so I'll summarize what's been going on and attempt to be a better blogger next month!

1.  Wood Elf Army is now built to 2500 points for standard Warhammer Fantasy as well as almost ready for 2500/625 games of Storm of Magic!

  • Still have to paint up 18 Eternal Guard and put them on magnetic bases (the ones from GF9)
  • Still have to assemble the Elven Sorceress on an Owl from coolminiornot:
  • Currently working on modifying the Arcane Fulcrums to be more Sylvan in style.  i.e. converting the Eternity Stair to a Platform with Trees on it.  (I know more trees? wtf)
  • Ordering 4 Sabretusks and a Great Stag from GW to put into the SoM army.
  • Still have to paint/assemble/base the Owl,Eternal Guard, Sabretusks, Stag, 2 Albion Truthsayers and the Arcane Fulcrums.
2.  Beastman Army is now built to 2500 points for the standard Warhammer Fantasy game.  They are not ready for Storm of Magic and probably won't be for a long time.
  • I still have to paint the entire Beastman army as well as finish up a few conversions.
  • I still have to create movement trays, basing schemes, and neat little unit fillers to enhance the look of the army.
  • Also had a KILLER game against Daemons 2 weeks ago against my friend Chris.  Only lost by 100 vp's and against Daemons - I'll take it!  Wish I had thought to record our game.  Next go around I am ensuring that my games get recorded in some fashion!
3.  Warmachine army has now been collected, assembled and primed to 35 points!
  • Still have to paint up the entire army, I've started the Mage Hunter Strike Force already.
  • Played my first game with them against Menoth and did quite well.  Underestimated the close combat capabilities of the enemy warcaster but oh well.
  • Developed some good tactics I think and learned exactly what not to do in Warmachine and Hordes.
4. Hordes army collected to 35 points
  • Still have to assemble the 35 points
  • Still have to play a game with them once assembled.
5.  Collected 1000 points of Dark Eldar for 40k.  I've been running a 40k workshop at my local gamestore on Monday nights to teach new players and existing players the game and give pointers on how to enhance the hobby aspect of the game.  It's going well - expect updates.

6.  The 40k Ard Boyz tournament is next weekend and I'll be competing in that.  I know I told myself I wasn't going to compete but man...it's Ard Boyz.  I feel it's calling.

We'll see how things work out this week =).

Retribution of Scryah army obtained.

So the other day I made a minor purchase...and managed to obtain 130 points worth of Warmachine's Retribution of Scryah for my next army.  I bought the entire lot off a friend of mine for a good deal (Thanks Darron!) and will be assembling/painting this army up soon as my Beastmen are painted and based.  I'm forcasting probably late April to early May.  You can look forward to blog posts then about these "Angry Elves" as my buddies call them.
Anyway unassembled (mostly) army pic:

And so begins my journey into yet another game system to spend money on.
