Company of the Damned – Wood Elf Army Book Review – Part Four: Unit Summaries Continued…

We last left off with discussing the Knights of Athel Loren, where the Glade Riders and Warhawk Riders had their abilities and special rules listed.  We will now do a brief foray into the Mounts associated with the Wood Elf Army before moving on to other units.

The Elven Steed
The Elven Steed is a fast moving, fey mount that is fairly popular among the Wood Elf nobles and the Glade Riders.    They have no special rules of note.

The Unicorn
The Unicorn is the majestic steed that allows itself to be ridden by the Spellweavers and Spellsingers of Athel Loren.
Unit Type: Monstrous Beast
Special Rules: Fear, Forest Spirit, Magic Resistance (2), Impale.
Impale:  Unicorn’s close combat attacks are at +2 Strength on the turn in which it charges.

The Great Eagle
The Great Eagle not only serves as a character mount but also may be fielded using the Rare slot allocation.  Great Eagles are great flying beasts that with their high Weapon skill and good Toughness make an excellent mount for a Wood Elf character.
Unit Type: Monstrous Beast
Special Rules: Fly

Great Stag
These mighty and majestic creatures serve as mounts for only the most heroic of Wood Elf heroes.
Unit Type: Monstrous Beast
Special Rules: Fear, Forest Spirit, Impact Hits (D3)

Forest Dragons
The great wyrms of the forest reside peacefully within the boughs of Athel Loren.  They are both loyal friends to the Wood Elves and storms of destruction when their ire is raised.  The Forest Dragon will serve as a mount or really a partner to a Glade Lord that has been deemed worthy.
Unit Type: Monster
Special Rules: Fly, Forest Stalker, Large Target, Scaly Skin (3+), Terror, Soporific Breath
Sophorific Breath – Strength 2 breath weapon with a -3 armour save and units that suffer one or more hits suffer from Stupidity for the remainder of the game.

Unit Type: Infantry
Special Rules: Always Strikes First, Forest Stalker, Immune to Psychology, Skirmishers, Talismanic Tattoos, Shadow Dances of Loec.
The Shadowdancer , the hero level Wardancer character, also has the ability to become a Level 1 Wizard of the Lore of Shadow and has the Blessings of the Ancients special rule.

Waywatchers
The Waywatchers have been and will always be my favorite unit in the Wood Elf army, they are also as iconic as the Wardancers.  The Waywatchers got a fairly big boost this book.  They lost their Lethal Shot ability and their modifier to being hit but gained a far better special ability in exchange.  The Waywatcher fills the Rare selection while the Waystalker is a hero selection.
Unit Type: Infantry
Special Rules: Always Strike First, Forest Stalker, Scouts, Skirmishers, Hawk-eyed Archer.

The Waystalker, the Waywatcher character selection, also has the Sniper special rule in regards to his shots fired.

Hawk-eyed Archer: The unit or character will decide if it will use the aimed shot or fast shot selection.  Fast shot means they make a ranged attack with the Multiple Shots (2) special rule.  Aimed shot means they make a single ranged attack but the target receives no armour saves against the attack.

The Great Hunt, War Host of Athel Loren - v.1.0 - 2800 pt Wood Elf List

Here is the first run at a 2800 pt list I'm going to try out.  This is obviously not optimized but it's incorporating various units I want to try out or keep using.

Lords: 411
Glade Lord – Armor of Fortune, Great Weapon – 186 pts
Spellweaver – Level 4, Asrai Longbow, Lore of Shadow – 225 pts

Heroes: 360
Glade Captain – BSB, Talisman of Endurance – 130 pts
Spellsinger – Level 2, Asrai Longbow, Lore of Beasts – 120 pts
Waystalker – Bow of Loren – 110 pts

Core: 828
Dryads x 10 – 110 pts
Eternal Guard x 19, Full Command, Shields – 258 pts
Glade Guard x 14, Mus. Std Bearer, Hagbane Tips – 230 pts
Glade Guard x 14, Mus. Std Bearer, Hagbane Tips – 230 pts

Special: 656
Tree Kin x 4 – 180 pts
Wild Riders x 7 - Champion, Std. Bearer, Shields – 216 pts
Wildwood Rangers x 20 – Full Command, Banner of Eternal Flame – 260 pts

Rare: 545
Great Eagle
Great Eagle
Treeman – Strangleroot – 245
Waywatchers x 10 – 200 pts

Total: 2800

I am eager to see how Lore of Shadows and Lore of Beasts work together for Wood Elves (As I know how well they work together for Beastmen).  I am also eager to see how the Waystalker with the Bow of Loren performs.  I am unsure how a diminished Treekin unit will perform (as I am loathe to replace a unit that was such a reliable hammer in the old list).  I anticipate the Waywatchers will once again prove why they are my favorite unit and I'll see how the close combat version of my general works out.  (Keep in mind for the past 5+ years he's been only armed with Bow of Loren/Arcane Bodkins)

None of the units shall receive a name until they have proven themselves in battle!  Also, I don't want to go through the trouble of creating a wicked awesome backstory only to nuke the unit cause it failed to meet my expectations.

We'll see!

Company of the Damned – Wood Elf Army Book Review – Part Four: Unit Summaries

Now that we have identified what has been lost, what has been changed, and more importantly what has been gained; let us now look into the actual units that are available.  We will be going over a brief summary of each unit included in the new Wood Elves army book in this series of posts followed up later with a full Unit Tactica and Review after I have had more chances to play with the new book.

The Glade Lord and Glade Captain
The Glade Lord was formerly known as the Wood Elf Highborn and is still referred to as such in the flavor description of the unit whereas the Glade Captain was previously referred to as the Noble.  The Glade Lord serves as the martial lord choice of the Wood Elf book as does the Glade Captain but also may serve as the Battle Standard Bearer

Unit Type: Infantry
Special Rules: Always Strike First, Forest Stalker, The Arrow of Kurnous.

Arrow of Kurnous – This is a special rule where if you have a model with this rule in the army, at the beginning of the game if the enemy general is within Line of Sight and 36” then they suffer a S3 hit with no armour saves.  This is meant to represent the Wood Elves insult to the enemy general and an instrument to remind them of their mortality.

The Glade Lord and Glade Captain have access to the Enchanted Arrows special rule and may upgrade their arrows accordingly.
Both may be mounted on an Elven Steed, a Great Eagle, or a Great Stag.  The Glade Lord may also ride a Forest Dragon.

The Spellweaver and Spellsinger
The Spellweaver is the Lord level wizard choice while the Spellsinger is the hero level choice for the Wood Elf army.  Both the Spellweaver and Spellsinger have access to all 8 lores of magic, however the Spellweaver also has access to the Lore of High Magic and Lore of Dark Magic as well.

The Knights of Athel Loren

The Wood Elves have always been known for their speed and maneuverability on the battlefield.  The Knights of Athel Loren fully embrace this ideal in the form of the Glade Riders and the Warhawk Riders.

The Glade Riders serve as the Core fast cavalry for the Wood Elf army.  They have access to the Enchanted Arrows special rule and may upgrade their arrows accordingly.  The Glade Riders also are Ambushers meaning that they begin the game off the board and may come in at any board edge to wreck havoc!
